My story

I’m M, the artist behind Nature’s Couture Jewelry! I want to share a little about myself and why I do what I do. 

I consider myself fortunate to be born to two incredible humans that were amazing at creating beautiful things with their hands. I grew up with creating as a norm and learned many arts from each of them.

My mother is a great-granddaughter of pioneers that crossed the harsh plains in search of a better life. She’s amazing at sewing, quilting, crochet, knitting, cooking, food preservation, and baking. 

My father was born under a tree on our desert tribal land. He spent his younger years living in a hogan and learning the family trades of silversmithing, beading, and rug weaving. As he grew, he was self-taught woodworker, car mechanic, knife maker and anything else he could dream of learning. He often told me that I could learn anything I wanted to, I just needed to pick up a book. He spent lots of time with me observing nature and the stars, teaching me all he knew.

From the time I could barely walk and peak over the workbench, I would watch him make silver jewelry, asking him a million questions. He was a very patient teacher; I was mesmerized by the art. Over the years he introduced me to different techniques he knew- inlay, tufa stone casting, stone cutting, and repair. All of these techniques performed using the knowledge passed down from his parents, even tools passed down from them. This is how I learned, so it is how I create. I use his very basic, sometimes handmade tools. The torch I create with is the same one my toddler eyes watched him use. My tools also consist of my grandmothers ring mandrel and handmade stamps. My crucible was made by my father’s hands using clay we collected from the west desert. When he taught me to create leaves, I was not only fascinated by the process, but I loved making them. I include them on many of my designs. 

My traditional training as well as love of mountains and nature inspire all of my work. Welcome to my love, my art. I’m excited to create beautiful things and share them with you!
